Torben Brookman featured in LPA's first Musical Chairs Bulletin
Torben Brookman is one of the Managing Directors of Arts Asia Pacific and was recently elected to the LPA Executive Council. LPA catches up with him to discuss his career influences and life as a Producer.
What inspired you to consider a career in the Arts?
Both of my parents were (and still are) involved in the performing arts and throughout my childhood I was constantly exposed to and involved in all aspects of the industry. This varied from being put onstage with visiting performing companies, through to casual work in front of house, box office or as technical crew that I undertook during High School and University. I never actually considered it to be a career, just something that I always really enjoyed being involved in. At University I studied a Science degree and majored in Pharmacology and Physiology and at the conclusion of my degree I was offered an Honours position in Exercise Physiology and Sports Science which I was planning to undertake. However, over the holidays between the conclusion of my degree and the commencement of my Honours course, I had the opportunity to work as a production assistant on the WOMADelaide music festival and after a couple of months of working on a music festival with musicians and artists from around the world the idea of returning to University for a year of lab work and research seemed to lose its appeal! I decided to defer my Honours placement for a year to see what other work I could find in the performing arts. From then on I took on an many different roles as I could and was lucky enough to end up with fairly broad and practical knowledge of most areas of the industry. Needless to say, I never did return to science.
Who has influenced you most professionally?
Rob Brookman, Tim McFarlane, Kerry Comerford
How would you describe an average day in the office?
As we have a young daughter (Mietta), I generally get up quite early and do half an hour checking emails that have come in overnight in the morning on the laptop at home. I am then usually in the office by 9am until around 6pm and then usually have conference calls with colleagues who are in London and South Africa scheduled for the early evening, which I do from home. If there are any urgent emails that I haven’t dealt with during the day, I then do these at home later in the evening after Mietta has gone to bed.
Describe one unforgettable moment in your career?
One moment that I will never forget in my career was working on a season of the Cats World Tour production in Qatar in 2003. We were approached to bring Cats to Qatar by the Qatar Foundation but were faced with the problem of not having an appropriate venue in the country. The solution…. Build a temporary theatrical venue within the Ritz Carlton Hotel on top of their two indoor tennis courts. The venue was aptly named “The Ritz Court Theatre”. It was an amazing process that was turned around in eight days from our arrival in Qatar to the first show including the creation of an intimate 700 seat theatre, the first two rows of which were occupied by enormous armchairs (they could comfortably accommodate two people each) for the Qatar Royal Family.
How do you like to spend your spare time?
At the moment I don’t get a lot of spare time as my wife Richelle and I, as well as running Arts Asia Pacific, have a 17 month old daughter Mietta who keeps us very busy. When I do have a moment to myself I like to get out for a run, go to the gym or go to the beach for a surf.
What is one thing can’t you live without?
In my working life, definitely my laptop and in my personal life my family.
As Managing Director of Arts Asia Pacific, what is the most exciting part of your role?
The most exciting and certainly the most daunting part of my role is deciding upon and creating new projects. It’s a wonderful experience to work on a new production, event or tour from conception of the idea right through until delivery of the finished ‘product’, however, at the end of the day there’s never any guarantee that what is created will sell tickets or be accepted by audiences, critics or peers so it’s a nerve-wracking process.
You have produced many shows from Jesus Christ Superstar, Slava’s Snowshow to We Will Rock You in the Asia Pacific, what challenges do you face working in this territory? Are there certain cultural sensitivities that you must be aware of when putting on a show on in Asia?
Asia is certainly a very challenging place to work but it’s also a very exciting and dynamic place to work. To a large extent this is due to the variety of cultural differences and sensitivities that exist within the region. This is not simply limited to ‘western’ and ‘eastern’ differences but there are also myriad of differences between the various Asian countries which we work in such as China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan and for example, what works in China doesn’t necessary work in Korea and vice versa.
Congratulations on being elected to the LPA Executive Council. What drove you to become a member of the LPA board?
I’ve always been interested in the activities of LPA and am also always keen to be involved in any organisations that expand, promote and support our industry. I also felt that as an younger emerging producer that it was important to becoming involved in organisations such as the Executive Council of LPA which shapes how our industry evolves and develops.

THE WINDOW Asian and Australian Touring
One of the best productions in Tokyo this year… beautifully paced and interspersed with delightful humour, The Window will live for a long time in audiences’ hearts, wherever it is staged”
Nobuko Tanaka, The Japan Times
After a sell-out tour of Japan, the acclaimed multi-media theatrical event comes to the Adelaide Fringe in 2008.
Inspired by archetypal tales of journey, growth and redemption, The Window is a very human, personal story about a woman at the crossroads of daughterhood and motherhood. A story about abandonment, family, truths and untruths. Above all, it is a story of hope.
Featuring exceptional performances from co-author/actors Julie Eckersley (The Wedge, Newstopia, MTC) and Jo Turner (STC, Belvoir St, All Saints), The Window is an international collaboration between artists from Australia, Canada and Japan. This multi-media theatre event includes and inspiring soundscape by award-winning Canadian composer Michel Robidoux (Les Deux Mondes Company, Montreal) and stunning live visuals created by Queensland video artist Jen Jackson.
Producer and Director Mark Bromilow describes it as “a true collaboration between artists – a unity of sound, image and story”. COMPAGNIE PHILIPPE
GENTY ‘La
Fin Des Terres’
Tsing Kwai Theatre
Hong Kong
29-30 December, 2007
Macau Cultural Centre
Macau
4 January, 2008
“Genty is a veteran
master of theatrical visual illusions, and his new production,
La Fin des Terres… is a kaleidoscopic dream fantasy
in which impossible transformations take place” The Sunday Times
“To miss a new work
by Philippe Genty is to miss out… pure poetry,
life-saving grace,
and delight for both the Paris Capitale eyes
and the heart."
The renowned Compagnie Philippe
Genty has been presenting inspired and original work that
merges visual and physical theatre with dance and puppetry
for the last thirty years. Genty’s universe is surprising,
funny, and sometimes disturbing, but its richness in colors
and shapes is always fascinating.
This universe takes shape
in the French company’s latest production La
Fin Des Terres, which roughly translates to “Lands
End” or “where the world ends” and recently
toured to Hong Kong and Macau in December, 2007.
In a journey to the heart
of dreams with their apparent incomprehensibility, recurrent
visions, phobias, monsters and fairies, we follow the
fragmentary story of a couple that take a poetic plunge
into the land’s end, a dream world where imagination
begins.
